This is where the Provan's spent Xmas in 1997, along the Gulf Coast of Texas. The picture above gives a good feel for the isolated feel, something you can see even more clearly in the full size version of the above "thumbnail". Looking out at the gulf, we really felt like we were in the middle of nowhere. But we weren't.
For one thing, immediately over the sand dunes that you can see in the picture is a road on the beach. No, I don't mean a road next to the beach. And I don't mean that people sometimes drive on the beach. I mean a road actually on the sand of the beach, with permanent traffic control and parking signs. It's even on the maps. Its runs some 30 miles down the coast, although we only drove it a few miles.
The house we stayed in
can only be described as "rambling". You can see it here
on the right. (There's
a larger, more detailed view beneath the
thumbnail.) With eleven adults, two teenagers larger than almost all
the adults, and four children, we need a lot of room, and this house
gave us room to spare. We don't know how the house got there, and we
don't know how long it will stay. As you can see by
this broader view of the property, it's
surrounded by condo's, and it's owned and managed by the same
people. I hope they appreciate the unique beauty of the house, 'cuz if
they don't, it won't be long before they pave it over.
The "town center" was only a few blocks away. It wasn't very large, but it had plenty of fresh fish, both for cooking up back at the house and for the restaurant trips we made when we didn't feel like cooking. There really wasn't much there beside the Gulf. The high point of the town was probably the ferry that connects the town with the mainland.
